Who can participate?

To participate you must be either an undergraduate in Harvard College, or a Harvard graduate student in GSAS, or one of the professional schools.

Can I participate in more than one category?

Yes.

Can I submit more than one project?

Yes.

Are group submissions allowed?

Yes. But all the members of the group must be Harvard students.

What media resources are available if I need help in making my movie?

The Multimedia Lab located in Lamont room A-10 features Mac and Windows equipment for creating, editing, and publishing a wide variety of multimedia projects. Staff are on-site to assist users until 12am from Sunday through Thursday, and until 10pm on Friday and Saturdays. For more information about multimedia resources at Harvard, please visit:

Are there restrictions on the use of texts, images, and media files...

Can I submit movies that I had produced for my classes?

Absolutely! Submissions should, however, be edited to meet the time and copyright regulations explained in the Competition Rules and submission guidelines. All submitted works must be original, and they cannot be resubmissions of works that had been previously entered for the Harvard Shorts competition.

What are you looking for in the submitted works?

We welcome works on any academic topic that make effective use of media to present original ideas and research in an engaging and compelling manner. Submissions, however, need not be elaborately cinematic or technically complex! Plain recordings of a narrated slideshow can be compelling, and have won the competition in the past.
