Background

Advances in technology have now made it possible for anyone with just a personal computer and commonly used software to compose engaging multimedia clips that until recently required long technical training and costly special equipment. Not least of the changes implicit in this new technology is the promise of radically altered horizons in intellectual life—the development of new, more aesthetically rich modes of exposition in which the message expressed by words is blended with the meanings and affect conveyed by images and music. The aim of this competition is to showcase the possibilities of this new medium, and to illustrate how creative expression can be made integral to scholarly communication.

The first Harvard Shorts festival was held in the spring of 2010; this is the third year of the event. Award winning clips can be viewed from 2010, 2011, and 2012.
